Disaster Management
SOLID Nepal is actively involved in disaster management efforts, focusing on preparedness, response, and recovery initiatives to mitigate the impact of natural and human-induced disasters on vulnerable communities.
Our approach integrates community-based planning, capacity building, and collaboration with local authorities and international partners to strengthen community resilience and ensure effective disaster risk reduction strategies.
Preparedness and Response
We work closely with governments and local communities to develop comprehensive disaster preparedness focusing on Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in emergencies. Our response mechanisms are designed to provide immediate assistance and support during emergencies.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
Post-disaster recovery efforts focus on restoring primary health care regarding SRHR, supporting affected populations, and rebuilding resilient community health service outlets. We prioritize the needs of vulnerable groups (people with disabilities and sexual and gender minorities), including women, children, and the elderly.
Government Disaster Management Policies and Frameworks
Nepal has established a comprehensive set of legal, regulatory, and operational frameworks to guide disaster risk reduction, preparedness, response, and recovery across the country. Organizations working in disaster management are expected to align their programmes and interventions with these government policies, frameworks, and guidelines.

SOLID Nepal's Disaster Response Experience
SOLID Nepal has extensive experience working with communities affected by disasters, with a particular focus on addressing health needs, including sexual and reproductive health (SRH), during humanitarian crises. The organization has a pool of experienced disaster management and public health experts with expertise in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery. Following the 2015 earthquake and during the COVID-19 pandemic, SOLID Nepal’s experts provided technical support to the Government of Nepal, particularly the Ministry of Health and Population, contributing their expertise to strengthen health and humanitarian responses.
Projects During Disaster Response
Reaching Adolescents in Crisis: SOLID Nepal's ASRHR Response after 2015 Earthquake in Gorkha
2015-2016 | Partner: IMC
SOLID Nepal, with the financial support from International Medical Corps, implemented the project- Strengthening Adolescents Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR) Services in Gorkha District project from November 2015 to November 2016.
The project was an example of SOLID Nepal's capacity to rapidly provide community-based ASRHR interventions in disaster-affected area even in challenging situation, and to ensure that adolescents' sexual and reproductive health needs were not overlooked during recovery.
Key Achievements
- 5,200+ adolescents were reached through peer education and interactive awareness sessions.
- 25 health facilities were assessed and supported to strengthen adolescent-friendly services.
- Health workers trained on adolescent-friendly ASRHR services and effective communication with young people.
- Peer-led education on topics such as puberty, family planning, menstrual health, gender-based violence and child marriage.
- Thousands of IEC materials were distributed to adolescents, families, schools, health facilities, and communities.
- Collaboration with government health authorities and local stakeholders ensured sustainability of the project.
Building resilience through ASRHR
The experience in Gorkha had shown SOLID Nepal's ability to mobilize, coordinate and implement integrated ASRHR programs in disaster-prone and hard-to-reach communities. By combining community engagement, youth-led approaches, health-system strengthening and coordination with local authorities, SOLID Nepal had helped ensure that adolescents continued to receive essential information and support even in the aftermath of a major disaster.

Developing Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) in Crisis Situations
The Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) in crisis situations is a set of critical, lifesaving interventions designed to address the sexual and reproductive health needs of populations affected by humanitarian emergencies from the onset of a crisis.
The MISP is a globally recognized framework based on the Inter-Agency Field Manual on Reproductive Health in Humanitarian Settings (IAFM). The manual was developed through extensive collaboration among representatives of United Nations agencies, international non-governmental organizations, and other humanitarian partners working through the Inter-Agency Working Group (IAWG) on Reproductive Health in Crises.
In 2018, the Government of Nepal, through the Ministry of Health and Population, adopted the internationally recognized MISP framework. As an organization with expertise in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and disaster management, SOLID Nepal played a significant technical role in supporting the adoption and contextualization of the MISP for the Nepalese context.
SOLID Nepal provided extensive technical support, including the development and delivery of a Master Training of Trainers (MToT) program. The organization also developed practical, user-friendly training and teaching materials to support the effective implementation of MISP. These materials and training approaches have subsequently been rolled out across provinces and local governments.
Through these efforts, the MISP has become an integral component of disaster preparedness and response in Nepal, helping ensure that essential sexual and reproductive health services are prioritized and maintained during humanitarian crises.
