Strengthening the Men's Health Clinic at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH)

Sunaulo Pariwar Nepal (SPN), as the implementing partner of UNFPA, and the Society for Local Integrated Development Nepal (SOLID Nepal) have entered into an agreement to implement a project commencing on 8 July 2026. As part of this partnership, the project supports the expansion and strengthening of the Men's Health Clinic at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH).

TUTH's existing Andrology and Men's Health Clinic, operating under the Infertility Care Center, currently provides specialized consultations focused primarily on infertility-related concerns. This initiative aims to expand its scope into a comprehensive Men's Health Clinic, addressing the full range of male-specific health needs.

Men's health remains a significantly underserved area in Nepal. Studies conducted at TUTH have found sexual dysfunction affecting up to 83.9% of men overall, rising to 97.5% among men with diabetes, alongside a growing burden of infertility, prostate and penile cancers, and related chronic conditions. Deep-rooted socio-cultural barriers continue to discourage men from seeking timely care, often resulting in late diagnosis and poorer health outcomes.

To address this, the project will support TUTH in:

  • Expanding clinical services through interdepartmental collaboration across Urology, Endocrinology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mental Health, and Community Medicine and Public Health
  • Developing and formally endorsing national-level clinical guidelines, SOPs, and protocols for a Men's Sexual Health Program, in collaboration with a multi-sectoral expert panel including UNFPA and the Family Welfare Division (FWD), Ministry of Health and Population
  • Enhancing clinic infrastructure to ensure patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Rolling out public awareness and IEC (information, education, and communication) campaigns to reduce stigma and encourage men to seek care
  • Building the capacity of clinic staff through training and technical support
  • Advancing research on men's health to inform future policy and service delivery nationally

Once established, the clinic is envisioned as Nepal's first comprehensive Men's Health Clinic - a national benchmark that other institutions can replicate, contributing to broader public health outcomes across the country.
